Watagan Mountains Endurance

4th/5th of June 2022 – 20/40/60/80km rides

Entries Now OPEN -

Even in the most challenging of times, hope persists! We are looking forward to welcoming you back to our 20km, 40km, 60km (42+18km elevator) and 80km rides on 4th/5th of June 2022! We have continued to explore our beautiful Watagan Mountains trails since our inaugural training ride that took place 17 and 18 April 2021. And we are proud to present our new tracks to you:

Start: Horses will require a reasonable level of fitness as the ride starts with a 3km climb up into the mountains. There are some short rough patches, but all the tracks are 4WD accessible. All legs include out and back tracks with turnaround points so expect some two-way horse traffic. There is only 2km of tar at the start and end of the ride, on wide country roads with a good verge. The rest of the tracks traverse scenic national park and state forest trails.

80km ride

Leg one After a steady climb into the Watagans, take in our scenic Forestry trails as you travel out to several picturesque lookouts, giving breathtaking view of both the Hunter Valley and the coast from Newcastle along to Brisbane Water on the Central Coast. Returning back through the Forest you will get to enjoy another two lookouts across the Hunter Valley. If you look carefully you will even be able to see back to ride base from the top!! Once you have had your fill of the views you will have a steady climb back to the base of the mountains and back home to base along country roads.

Leg two Climbing back up into the heart of the Watagans, leg two will take you along gently undulating tracks deep into the National Park, giving you the chance to take in the beautiful scenery, ranging from stunning Rain forests to Eucalyptus and native flora. Leg two takes you to yet another beautiful lookout with views across the Valley. The same steady climb back out of the mountains as on leg one and back home to complete and conquer the Watagans Ride!

40km training ride will follow leg 2 of the 80km.

The 60km elevator leg will follow the 20km ride leg.

The Course has several steady climbs for all legs and distances, but once at the top the tracks are gently undulating. All tracks follow National Parks and Forestry roads so mainly gravel and dirt roads, a small amount of dirt/sandy track, and only 3km of Tar road accompanied by a grassy verge on each leg. Course is suitable for novice horses ridden conservatively, it is called the Watagan Mountains for a reason!

Ride Base: We have a beautiful ride base at 166 Mill Lane, Quorrobolong on the quieter, Hunter Valley side of the mountains. There is good access for big rigs. Camping is available from 4pm Friday afternoon.

Dogs: Dogs are allowed but they must be on a leash at ALL times.

Fires are allowed (subject to Fire Ratings on the day) but must be in a contained pit or drum.

Horse water will be provided from Saturday morning. If you are arriving Friday night you need to bring your own water for Friday night. You should bring your own human drinking water. BYO cups for water on track. Checkpoints will have water available but will not be providing cups due to COVID restrictions.

Coffee van: A coffee van will be on site on Saturday and Sunday but there will not be a canteen. The coffee van will sell light refreshments, but you should bring your own meals.
